Let me count the ways…..you are unoriginal!

TV is my obsession. I love everything about it. I love the distraction it provides, the ability a show has to make me cry, to make me bite my nails with nerves, to laugh, even to feel butterflies in my tummy. The first shows that ever got me hooked on TV were Friends and Dawson’s Creek. When Joey finally kissed Pacey….I was short of breath. The time when Ross kisses Rachel for the first time….amazing! Even when I moved to boarding school in France when I was 16 I had my best friend record the new episodes of Dawson’s Creek and Friends and when I would return to Mexico on vacation we would sit in her house and watch episode after episode. I loved those times. Not just because I was spending quality time with my best friend but because of the laughs and tears that resulted from all the episodes. TV shows don’t just have the ability to mess with my emotions they have also on more than one occasion taught me valuable lessons or helped me empathize with someones circumstances.

The longest running show that I have been watching since the pilot episode is ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. I am a hard core fan. I have actually watched the complete series over five times. Every time I watch the episodes, characters and story lines have the same mesmerizing effect on me – I’m hooked. Now, when you are watching season 1 of Grey’s Anatomy for the fifth time and your husband comes home and asks what you are watching….. well, lets just say he doesn’t share the same passion for McDreamy as I do and he tries his best to get me to stop. BUT I CANT!! It’s not just the very good looking cast that keeps me coming back for more, its the amazing story line they develop and the medical cases that come up in each episode. So you can imagine my excitement when CBS starting advertising its new medical drama Code Black. I set the series to record on our TV and waited for the pilot.

Code Black is “a heart-pounding medical drama that takes place in the busiest, most notorious ER in the nation, where the staggering influx of patients can outweigh the limited resources available to the extraordinary doctors and nurses whose job is to treat them all—creating a condition known as Code Black“. As I sat down to watch the pilot I was intrigued. I have to admit that it wasn’t as gripping as the pilot of Grey’s Anatomy but it took off to an interesting start. IT was around episode 5 that I started noticing all the similarities in the major story lines of the show with Grey’s Anatomy. We have the attending (Neal/Derek) that starts to develop feelings for the intern (Christa/Meredith) even when they know it is against hospital policy. Then we have the Dr (Carla/Izzy) that has cancer and is admitted to the hospital where she once used to work. Then we have the patient who is in need of surgery but cant have it because it would be contrary to her religious beliefs (CD S.01. Ep 13/ GA S01.Ep.08). How about the episode where a patient who was on a first date gets admitted to the ER and the date sticks around through the medical procedures. Lastly, the episode where the doctors have to try and save the patient while they have a gun pointed at their head. So far Code Black is on its 14th episode and I have to say I am disappointed with the lack of originality. I think I will give it a few more episodes before I decide to pull the plug.

As far as I am concerned there is still only one medical drama on the air worth watching and that’s Shonda Rhimes Grey’s Anatomy on ABC’s #TGIT .

  1. The original medical drama will always be ER. Whenever I see an episode I still finding gripping and engaging. For me that will always be the ultimate medical drama, and Grey’s anatomy wouldnt exist without it but I can totally understand the appeal and McSteamy for me :p haha

  2. Moni…!!! After reading this last post, I humbly recommend a FAST from Grey’s…!!! Either that or a daily visit to a therapist that can help you control this “addiction”…! Please find other series to watch…!!! I mean I do think you need a balanced series diet…
